After a tough couple of months, sales tax collections in Allegany County are improving. The Allegany County Budget Committee will review the report June 18th.
County Treasurer Terri Ross said this morning that people "shouldn't panic" by the decline in May. She says the reductions were due primarily to the state completing "prior years adjustments" and did not accurately reflect the current local economy. In fact, Ross said, sales tax collections are actually "up about $80,000 compared to last year at this time. The local economy is actually quite stable," she added. If the current trend continues, she noted, the county will be right in line with proposed budget expectations.
