Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I- 57th District) will be presenting a New York State Senate Liberty Medal to Bolivar-Richburg Central School graduate Alex Jones.
On April 29, 2018, Mr. Jones, 19, used the Heimlich Maneuver to save the life of Maria Welker, 89, of Jamestown. Both Mr. Jones and Mrs. Welker were dining with family at the time in the Jamestown Bob Evans restaurant.
Certified in CPR, it was the second time Mr. Jones used the Heimlich Maneuver to save a life. In 2017, he used the same technique to rescue a child at a Bolivar-Richburg school function who was choking on a piece of candy.
For his life-saving action, Senator Young will present Mr. Jones with a New York State Senate Liberty Medal, one of the highest civilian honors a New York resident can receive. Created in 2000, the Liberty Medal, similar to the national Congressional Gold Medal, is awarded to individuals who have merited special commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts and achievements on behalf of their fellow New Yorkers.
