Livingston Correctional Facility to close later this year - WHEC

SONYEA, N.Y. (WHEC) — The State Department of Corrections announced Friday the Livingston Correctional Facility is slated to close this fall.

The Livingston Correctional Facility will join Lincoln Correctional Facility in New York City as the two facilities tabbed for closure. The facility in Sonyea currently holds 806 inmates and staffs 327 employees.

The Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) says the closure comes as part of the 2020 New York State Budget which authorizes the closure of up to three facilities. DOCCS says their closure plan provides a variety of options for staff to transition to other facilities or continue their employment with the State in other ways.

DOCCS stated that crime rates were at an all-time low in 2017 (reporting began in 1975). Crime rates continued to decline in 2018, the sixth straight year the number has fallen.

According to Assemblywoman Marjorie Byrnes, the facility in Livingston County will close in September.
