Democrats Donate to Food Pantry in Alfred
Belmont, NY – The Allegany
County Democratic Committee delivered three totes of non-perishable food and
personal care items to the Alfred University Food Pantry. Donations were
collected at the recent “Coffee with Democrats” event and is one way the
Democratic Committee lives its motto: “Serving our
Community.”
The Alfred University Food
Pantry’s mission is to support the AU campus
community and surrounding area by providing healthful
food options to those who may need
them. They accept perishable and non-perishable food and personal care
items, particularly feminine sanitary products.
According to James
Ward, Health and Wellness Educator at Alfred University, "College students
are disproportionally affected by food insecurity. We invite students housed on
or off campus, and community members, to access our pantries. We host mini
pantries in the Herrick and Scholes libraries and a main pantry in the PL
Bernstein Center for Advising in the Powell Campus Center.”
“Not all students are
required to carry a meal plan, continues Ward, “and some struggle to afford
nutritious food. Students use the pantries daily. Some students stay on campus
during breaks when food service operations reduce their hours, but most have
access to common areas where meals can be prepared.”
Community members are
invited to take part. In addition to food,
personal care items, and monetary donations for purchasing perishable staples
such as bread, milk, and eggs, volunteering one’s time is always appreciated. Please
contact James Ward at wardjv@alfred.edu or 607-.871-2400.
The next “Coffee with
Democrats” will take place on Sat. October 12th at the committee’s
Election Headquarters at 84 North Main St. in Wellsville. Please drop in for a
chat and to support our local food pantries.
