In 2018, the Wellsville Village Board passed a local law that dealt with, in part, rental properties. The law established a rental registry for all non-owner occupied properties. During a meeting Monday night, Trustee Ed Fahs said 479 properties meet the criteria for the registry, but only 262 have complied. There is a fee for the submission to the registry. Originally, the fee would escalate for landlords that missed the deadline to provide information to the village.
The village decided last night to give landlords 'one final chance to comply.' In discussing the last chance effort, Mayor Randy Shayler said "let me get your attention with a bill." The plan is to send a high-fee bill to landlords that are not complying, agreeing that, if they did submit information to the rental registry, the fee be reduced. Several other communities across western New York and the southern tier have rental registries.
