Domestic Violence Awareness Weekend returns to Potter County for the eighth year
Friday and Saturday, July 12-13. Headquarters is the Roulette Firehall. Local
resident David Shalkowski has spearheaded this public awareness and fundraising
event, as a memorial to his sister, Cheri Shalkowski Baker, who died as a result
of a domestic violence incident in Roulette on July 13, 2008. Among the
organizations that are supporting the observance is A Way Out, the Potter County
domestic violence and sexual assault support services and education agency.
It starts at 7 pm Friday with a bingo game, ice cream social and auction at
the firehall. On Saturday, a 5K run/walk will be held at 10:30 in memory or
support of domestic violence victims. Registration opens at 9. A chicken
barbecue starts at 11, followed by a homemade barbecue sauce contest at 2 and a
chocolate dessert contest at 2:30. A cornhole tournament will be held at 6 pm;
registration opens at 5. Those seeking more information or wishing to donate
items for the auction are advised to send an email to
david.shalkowski@yahoo.com.
