Wellsville: Motorists appear to respect school buses

Last week, the Wellsville Police Department participated in a grant-funded program called "No Empty Chair Enforcement Campaign." Its purpose was to protect school students. Wellsville Police Chief Tim O'Grady said the campaign was focused on stopping abuse and raise awareness of traffic safety. O'Grady said his officers spent 14 hours last week on specialized traffic enforcement. Focus points included seat belts and child restraints, speeding in school zones, cell phone use and texting and more. Perhaps the most encouraging news from O'Grady was that during the week long campaign, no motorists passed a stopped school with its red lights flashing. However, it wasn't a 'perfect' week. Police did issued 15 tickets to drivers who went astray in the above categories. As for the overall success of the campaign, O'Grady said "I hope it helped."
