Fire causes damage at Alfred University

Tuesday afternoon, a small fire on a stove in Norwood residence hall activated the sprinkler system, which caused some damage to several rooms in the building.

Jessica Middaugh, chief of Public Safety, and Shaun Fields, Public Safety officer, responded and quickly extinguished the flames. No one was injured, but damage to some rooms in the residence hall has displaced 11 students for the remainder of the semester.

Thanks to the efforts of the Residence Life staff, Tamara Kenney, dean of Student Wellbeing, Mike Honeycutt, coordinator of Environmental Health and Safety, Jamie Babcock, executive director of Capital Projects and Facilities, and Tim Heckman, assistant director of Capital Projects and Facilities, alternate accommodations were quickly made for all displaced students.

We have secured the services of a firm, which has begun assessing the extent of the water damage. Repairs to the affected rooms in Norwood will begin soon.
