A major power outage has impacted the eastern portion of Allegany County Thursday afternoon. According to NYSEG, more than 1,500 customers lost power not long after 12 p.m. in the Alfred and Almond areas. Alfred Police Chief Paul Griffith said emergency actions were being taken to keep residents warm. Alfred State and Alfred University canceled evening classes. Griffith said the outage was connected with the local substation. The Chief said residents should prepare for "an extensive power outage."
Allegany County Emergency Manager Jeff Luckey said the power was restored after about a 4 and a half hour outage. He said two transformers at the substation failed. Warming shelters in Alfred and Almond were prepared for operation, if the outage continued into the night.
