Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) - Students from Andover High School came to Rochester Thursday to help house the homeless. The students in Mr. Owen's tech class constructed a tiny house that they delivered to Peace Village.Peace Village is the homeless encampment in Rochester. The shelter is fully insulated with LED solar lights and took the students approximately ten weeks to build.Owen said the project was a great way for students to learn while helping others.
"It's really enjoyable to see them connect with the community and see them really make a difference," said Zach Owen, who teaches technology at the school. "It is the special thing there."
Owen said the idea came together after he connected with the House of Mercy in 2016."The best part is connecting students with real problems - win-win," Owen said. "Students using technology and helping people out. So that's what it's supposed to be about."Costs for building the shelter came out to just under $1,000. A business in Andover paid for the materials.
