Police identify pilot killed in Broome County small plane crash
Endicott police say a 77-year-old Susquehanna County man was
killed Monday when the plane he was piloting crashed near the Tri-Cities Airport.
The crash happened at 11:18 a.m. First responders located a single engine
Trella T-21 aircraft that had crashed on the Norfolk Southern Railroad
property, in between Industrial Park Boulevard and Airport Road. According to
police, the pilot has been identified as 77-year-old Russell E. Darrow of
Brackney, PA. The investigation into the cause of the accident is being handled
by the National Transportation Safety Board. Agencies responding to the scene
and assisting with the incident included the Broome County Sheriff’s
Department, New York State Police, New York State Department of Environmental
Conservation Police, personnel from the Norfolk Southern Railway, Union
Emergency Squad, FAA and NTSB. It was the first fatal plane crash near the busy
airport in years.
