Armistice Day aka/Veterans Day at Allegany County Historical Society

From the Allegany County Historical Society (ACHS):
Sunday, November 11th is the 100th Anniversary of the signing of the Armistice which ended World War I.
We received the Proclamation of Senator Catharine Young which is shown in the foreground of our display which we will be leaving in place for a week or so following November 11th.

It is all in remembrance of the 11th hour of the 11th day in the 11th month of 1918 that we show our respect for all of our Veterans of Allegany County who proudly served.  At 11:00 a.m. you may hear bells ringing in your town.  Several towns are participating such as Belfast Catholic Church, and others.
ACHS is open Saturday (November 10th) and we would enjoy having anyone within drive-in range stop by between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to view the display as well as the other items on our Museum floor.
All of our events are free and our Museum is proudly expanding daily!  All done by volunteers.
One hundred years ago, early in the morning of November 11, 1918, word was received throughout Allegany County that an armistice had been signed, thus ending World War I.  Our local newspapers contained articles about celebrations throughout the county, including spontaneous parades, the ringing of bells, speeches, and other activities.  The joyous din lasted late into the night!
Let’s spread the word far and wide that bells be rung again on November 11, 2018, at 11 a.m. local time throughout Allegany County to commemorate this historic event that took place 100 years ago!
On the local level, Senator Catharine M. Young has commemorated November 11, 2018 with her Proclamation from the New York State Senate.
On the national level, the United States World War One Centennial Commission has organized a World War I remembrance, “Bells of Peace.”  They are asking that bells be rung on November 11, 2018, at 11 a.m. local time throughout the country.  For more information, their website is:  www.worldwar1centennial.org.
