David Peralta, music missionary at Knights Creek Church and a member of the Simon Bolivar Venezuelan National Symphony Orchestra, will entertain at the first coffee house event from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. October 5, at the church at 2987 Knights Creek Road (County Road 9), Scio. A movie night will be held at the same times November 2.
Pastor Carl Kemp said the first Friday of the month rotating coffee house-movie activities developed as part of a church planning series on how to embrace the greater community and its residents. The church seeks to expand on a free Community Picnic last month at Scio's Fireman's Park with residents of the hamlet and surrounding areas participating.
Peralta, who has appeared at various venues in the area, plays viola weekly at the church with the Acevedo-Escriban family of Houghton, all part of the church's music ministry team.
The musician has played with his country's orchestra in over 25 countries, including Moscow, Paris, London, at a private reception and concert for the Queen of England, international music festivals, the Grammys in Las Vegas, Carnegie Hall in New York City, and other U.S. cities.
The informal event will include coffee, other beverages and refreshments, with games available for children and teens. Children and adults also will be able to try musical instruments as part of the church's Sunday afternoon free lessons ministry.
Attendees can stay for the entire time or come and go depending on individual schedules.
Peralta also will play at 7 p.m. this Wednesday, October 3, as part of a free "Playing for an Audience of One" Christian musicians worship night at the David A. Howe Library auditorium - ground floor, rear entrance, 155 North Main Street, Wellsville.
The church's November movie night, to include free popcorn and other refreshments, will feature the "Jesus" film, shown millions of times throughout the world since its creation and holding The Guinness Book of World Records for the "Most Translated Film" in over 1,500 languages. Alternative entertainment also will be available for children.
The movie follows the life of Jesus of Nazareth, from birth to death and resurrecgtion, as described in the Bible's New Testament Gospel of Luke, including the strong presence of his parents in early life, and assembly and discipling of his apostles.
Knights Creek, which describes itself as "The Country Church with the Heart of Christ", is engaged in a number of community outreaches, including a free Community Dinner each Sunday following its 11 a.m. service, free Sunday afternoon music lessons for children and adults, and serving as a host site for Celebrate Recovery/Celebrate Victory from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays for adults of all ages who are struggling with any type of hurts, hangups,habits or destructive behaviors. Knights Creek also is part of a team that goes into Allegany County Jail weekly to present Celebrate Recovery to inmates and provides other ministries to help those who are struggling to cope with the upcoming holidays.
The church also holds a 6 p.m. service on Sundays, a 6 p.m. Bible study Wednesdays, and community prayer from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. each weekday for anyone with community, family or individual concerns.
