ALFRED STATION, NY – The New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) this week announced further delay in the completion of the project to replace Baker’s Bridge between state routes 21 and 244 in Alfred Station.
Originally, replacement of the bridge on State Route 961G was to be completed Aug. 23 but significant delays in utility relocation pushed the re-opening date back to mid-November. In a letter dated Wednesday (Nov. 21), Dan Ermer, area construction supervisor for DOT Region 6, said the state has again pushed back the anticipated project completion, this time to spring 2019.
Ermer said continued delays in natural gas line relocation, combined with poor soil conditions along Route 21 and an extremely wet fall season, kept the project from being completed on time.
During the bridge replacement project, State Route 961G, which runs between routes 21 and 244 in Alfred Station, has been closed to through traffic. The closure has primarily affected traffic to Alfred coming northbound on Route 21, with those motorists turning directly onto Route 244 about four-tenths of a mile north of the bridge. The detour directing traffic from the bridge to the 21/244 intersection will remain in place until the project’s completion.
