Fires strike Greenwood, Pulteney in Steuben County

Fire ripped through an apartment building in Greenwood Sunday. The 3-alarm blaze sounded at about 4 p.m. and sent volunteers to 2730 State Route 248 (between Andover Street and Fenton Avenue). All tenants safely evacuated but flames were leaping from the roof and there was heavy smoke when first responders arrived. Additional help was quickly called in from Canisteo, West Union, Andover, Jasper, Troupsburg and South Hornell. Whitesville was placed on standby. No serious injuries were reported. A fire investigation team was called in to identify the cause and origin.
Shortly before the Greenwood blaze, Pulteney firefighters were called to a house fire at 8697 Armstrong Road. The two-story wood-frame home is owned by Robert and Rhonda Clark. 911 said the fire started in the chimney and spread to a bedroom. When a fire chief arrived, he reported smoke was pouring from the eaves. The fire was then elevated to a two-alarm response bringing in equipment from Prattsburg, Hammondsport and Bath. The cause remains under investigation.
