BATH – The Steuben County Legislature will review funding
support for the Steuben Prevention Coalition through the remainder of the year
after federal grant funding fell through. Legislators will be asked when they
meet in regular session at 10 a.m. Monday to approve a gap of $5,681 left after
coalition officials were recently notified they would not receive the federal
Drug Free Communities Grant. The coalition is instrumental in drug preventative
outreach to youth in Steuben and conducting studies showing the effectiveness
of their efforts. In turn, those studies are used by other agencies to plan
programs and access services, according to county Office of Community Services
Director Dr. Hank Chapman. Catholic Charities has pledged gap funding of
$10,000 supplement the county’s contribution, which will be paid through the
county contingency funds. The funding was approved earlier this month by the
county Legislature’s Human Services Health and Education, and Finance
committees. Coalition Assistant Program Coordinator Colleen Banik said the
agency has developed a sustainability budget and is working with other agencies
to fund specific programs. Other agenda items include:
· Designating the
County of Steuben as Lead Agency for environmental studies needed to acquire
land next to the county landfill.
· Designating the
Steuben County Conference and Visitors’ Bureau as the Official Tourism
Promotion Agency for the County of Steuben.
· Setting times and places for the 2018 Budget message and a
public hearing on the tentative 2018 budget.
