Travel Advisory - Paving on SR 54, Bath to Hammondsport

TRAVEL ADVISORY

State Route 54 Paving
Towns of Bath and Hammondsport, Steuben County

The New York State Department of Transportation today announced that, on July 23, 2018, paving operations will begin on State Route 54 between CR113 in the town of Bath and 54A in the town of Hammondsport. Paving is anticipated to last approximately 2 weeks, weather permitting.

Traffic will be maintained with a one-lane, two-way traffic pattern controlled by flag persons.  Please note, this single lane operation may be up to two miles in length to allow for proper cure time of the pavement course before allowing traffic onto the pavement.  Motorists should be prepared for potentially lengthy delays.

It is imperative that motorists remember to drive carefully through the many highway and bridge construction zones they will encounter this season.

Recently, NYSDOT and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee unveiled a new public service announcement and social media campaign focused on the importance of respecting flagging personnel. This year’s work zone safety campaign, “Flaggers have families too,” is designed to remind motorists that flagging personnel are not attempting to disrupt traffic – they are simply doing their jobs and want to get home safely at the end of each work day. The PSA can be viewed here and here.

Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone.  In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver license.
