Lois Miller dubbed Have A Heart for the Homeless a success before she even sat down in her box Friday night.
The Have A Heart for the Homeless campaign raises awareness that there is a homeless population in the county.
"You may not see them, but they are out there on people's couches and in cars," according to a spokesperson for ACCORD which compiles statistics yearly on the number of homeless in the county. In 2019 there were 49 people without homes.
Miller said that Thursday night's girls basketball game netted two boxes full of personal care items and $60 in donations. Earlier Friday students from Immaculate Conception School donated six boxes full of items and a member of the congregation gave a $400 donation. Just as Miller's box night was getting started a donation of blankets was dropped off.
Temperatures dipped close to zero while Miller and friends gathered around a bon fire in the parking lot of First National Bank accepting all donations that came in and showing people what it looks like to be homeless in winter.
