There aren’t many qualities that are true of all life on
Earth, but the need for water is one of them.
World Water Day was established by the United Nations in 1993 to focus
attention on the importance of water. Only about 3.5 percent of Earth’s water
is fresh, and most is locked up in ice and glaciers. In his 2012 book Drinking
Water, A History, James Salzman writes, “The United Nations says that by 2030
more than half of the world’s people will live in ‘water-scarce’ areas.”
Students are encouraged to take part by composing a two-page
essay answering the question: “What would a day without water be like?” Two prizes of $50 will be awarded, to a
winning author in grades 5 through 8, and another in grades 9 to 12. Home
schooled students are welcome to participate.
Science and English faculty in all county schools have
contest guidelines to share with students, or you many request guidelines via contactusccac@gmail.com, or visit www.ccallegany.org to download a packet.
Essays are due Feb. 28, 2019. Entries must include author’s
name, grade, contact information and school.
Email submissions to: contactusccac@gmail.com, or mail them to: CCAC Essay
Contest, Box 425, Angelica, NY 14709.
Winners will be announced on World Water Day.
CCAC exists to fight pollution, focusing primarily on ending
the proliferation of infrastructure related to fracking, and halting the
disposal of hazardous and radioactive gas field wastes in Allegany and Steuben
county landfills. We meet monthly in Angelica and welcome others to join our
efforts to protect our clean water, soil, and air. Visit www.ccallegany.org,
