Join us to view the documentary "My Name is Allegany County" in the Cappadonia Auditorium in the Orvis Activities Center on the Alfred State College campus. Students in Soils will be viewing the movie as part of a discussion on soil contamination, but visitors are encouraged to join us! If you were involved in the Bump the Dump protest, please attend and share your experiences with the group!
The documentary covers events that occurred in Allegany County and surrounding areas in the late 1980s when officials sought to locate a low level nuclear waste dump in the area. It is a truly inspirational story.
Note: In the late 1980's into the early 1990's, the New York State Low Level Radioactive Waste Siting Commission proposed to locate three waste sites in Allegany County. The Concerned Citizens of Allegany County (CCAC) commanded a movement, the likes never before seen in this county. Hundreds were arrested when they blocked state officials from inspecting the proposed sites. When confronted by Sheriff Larry Scholes, each proestor politely responded, "My name is Allegany County." It was a turbulent time which brought about the 'Belfast 5,000' when 5,000 residents poured into Belfast for a public meeting. As a media guy who fed the story to several larger markets, it was a historical time.
