Allegany County
is confronting a growing crisis of child poverty and youth homelessness, with
numerous children and young adults struggling to secure safe housing and basic
needs like food. In response to this issue, ACCORD Corporation will host a
community forum to raise awareness and inspire action.
- Date: Thursday, October 24th
- Time: 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM
- Location: Howe Gallery at the David A. Howe Library, Wellsville, NY
What to
Expect:
- Panel Discussion: Experts in housing, social
services, and youth advocacy will share data, personal stories, and
strategies to address child poverty and homelessness.
- Community Engagement: Attendees will engage in
discussions on innovative solutions for these critical issues.
- Advocacy Opportunities: Learn how you can take
action to support vulnerable children and families in Allegany County.
Why This
Matters:
- High Child Poverty Rates: 23.3% of children
aged 0-5 in Allegany County live below the poverty line—much higher than
the national average of 18%.
- Rising Homelessness: In 2023, a 16% rise in
homelessness was recorded, with 20% of those affected being young adults
aged 18-24.
- Economic Disparities: Allegany County’s median
household income is $58,725, far below New York's state median of $81,386,
leading to ongoing struggles in meeting basic needs.
- Educational Barriers: Homeless youth
experience frequent educational disruptions, contributing to higher
dropout rates and perpetuating poverty.
This free event is open to all. ACCORD Corporation invites community members, business owners, educators, and local organizations to join the conversation. Together, we can build a stronger, more supportive community where every child has the opportunity to thrive.
