Obituary: Clifford H. DuBreuil, 90 - Coach to some, Dubs to others
Coach to some, Dubs to others. Passed in peace, Sunday, January 24, 2021, at the age of 90. Clifford Henry was born on December 9, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Son of Henry Thomas and Marian Elizabeth (Maynard) DuBreuil.Cliff is preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Jean McRoberts – DuBreuil, Alfie and Curtis.
Cliff is survived by 5 great-grandchildren and 3 children Susan DuBreuil of Brooktondale, NY, Thomas DuBreuil of Ithaca, NY, and Beth Houghtaling (Duane) of Maryland. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren, Wesley Hines of Homer, NY, Christina DuBreuil of Bloomington, IN, Thomas DuBreuil of Vass, NC, and Cody Pierce (DuBreuil) of Hanover, PA, and Erin McCart of Bloomington, IN.
He married Phyllis, his college sweetheart, in August of 1953 (despite her never dating a football player) He selflessly cared for Phyllis during her long battle with Alzheimer’s until her passing in 2009.
Cliff earned his Bachelors and Masters in Physical Education from Indiana University and served with the U.S. Army as First Lieutenant, INF, USAR.
Cliff started his career at the University of Rochester as a coach, intramural director, and teacher. He worked at Alfred University from 1959 – 2004. He became a member of the AU Hall of Fame in 1993 and received Emeritus Status in 2006. He valued the opportunity to work with James McLane and Alex Yunevich as the Freshman Football Coach. As Head Track Coach and Cross-Country Coach, he continually served on University committees.
His contributions to NCAA Division III Track and Field are a lasting legacy; he contributed to NCAA Division III Track and Field. He served as President of the NCAA Division III Track & Field Coaches Association, Chairman of the Division III National Championship Games Committee since its start, Vice President of the New York State Collegiate Track & Field Association, Chairman of the Niagara A.A.U. Track & Field Committee, District Commissioner of the Niagara A.A.U., Member of the Committee Standards for the Division III National Championships, Long Range Planning Committee for Division III Track & Field, Div. III National Outdoor Championships, Official Empire State Games, and founder and coach for the Alfred Atalantans for women.
His students loved and valued him his lasting legacy was every alumnus considered him a mentor, a teacher, and someone they could call on when needed. Coach was listed as a noteworthy education educator, and coach by Marquis Who’s Who. If you have ever read the book Walk Across America by Peter Jenkins, you can even find Coach there.
He was a member of Phi Epsilon Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, United States Track and Field Coaches Association, National Collegiate Athletic Association.
