Hyland vote in Angelica

Press release

NYs LARGEST LANDFILL IS SLATED TO CLOSE. WHERE WILL ITS CUSTOMERS TAKE THEIR TRASH?

Fact: NY City produced 255,555 tons of household waste in March 2020. (thecity.nyc) This doesn’t include sewage sludge, hospital, or industrial waste. NYC currently exports 9% of its garbage to Seneca Meadows in Seneca Falls. (waterfrontonline.blog) Seneca Meadows will close in 2025. Do you want 9% of NYC’s garbage dumped here?

HYLAND COULD SOON OBTAIN AN EXEMPTION TO ALLOW LANDFILLING OF NUCLEAR WASTE.

Fact: The Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Dept. of Energy and the nuclear industry are attempting to rename “Low-Level” radioactive waste (LLRW) as “Very Low-Level” Waste or VLLW. This bit of name-changing trickery will enable disposal of decommissioned nuclear power plants (and other hazardous and nuclear waste) in ordinary landfills. 13 nuclear reactors currently in the process of decommissioning are within 800 miles of Angelica. (nrc.gov)    LLRW from decommissioned reactors remains radioactive and dangerous to humans for hundreds of years. (https://www.nirs.org/radioactive-waste/llw/). Do you want ANY radioactive waste buried here?  Do you want Angelica to become another West Valley?

THE BASIC CAUSE OF CANCER IS DAMAGE TO DNA.

Fact: Some cancer-causing genetic changes can be acquired, often resulting from exposure to carcinogenic substances that damage DNA, such as certain chemicals in tobacco smoke, and radiation. (cancer.gov) Are you starting to wonder if this expansion might be more dangerous than it seems? Do you want time to gather all the facts?

IF YOU WAIT TO APPROVE, YOU CAN NEGOTIATE FOR IMPROVED DETECTORS AND SAFETY MEASURES.

Fact: Gamma-detecting scanners used at landfills cannot detect alpha or beta radiation. Alpha and beta-emitters can be inhaled, swallowed, or get into the body through a cut. They damage living tissue and cause severe damage to cells and DNA.  Gamma rays are often emitted along with alpha or beta particles during radioactive decay. Several inches of lead, or a few feet of concrete, may be required to stop them. Gamma rays can pass completely through the human body, causing ionizations that damage tissue and DNA. (epa.gov) Should Casella be held to the highest standards of detection for all three radioactive particles?  What is your health worth?

WHY IS CASELLA OFFERING SO MUCH MONEY?

Fact: Casella owns approx. 1000 acres. With so much available land, why would they intentionally select acres that are visible from the Village? Why would a business CHOOSE to pay more? Under the current deal, Angelica received $12 MILLION. This proposal offers $78 MILLION -- a 650% increase. WHY? Does this make good business sense to you? Does it seem too good to be true? Are you starting to wonder what is really behind this astronomical sum?

WE DON’T HAVE TO DECIDE RIGHT NOW.

Fact: The host agreement between the Town and Casella stipulates that voters have four chances to approve or deny a change to the agreement.  Proposition #1 can be denied this year and will still be on our ballots in three subsequent elections. We don’t have to decide right now. This expansion will affect your life in multiple ways for twenty-five years.  Are you only thinking about that head-spinning $78 MILLION?  If you vote NO this year, you can use the time before the next election to get answers to these questions.  We don’t have to decide right now.

THE MONEY WON’T START FLOWING UNTIL THE PERMITS ARE GRANTED.

Fact: According to Village officials, not one cent will be paid out until permits are finalized. This process can take 4-5 years and includes a thorough environmental review and public comment period that requires Casella to address any concerns you have.  You have four years to decide and Angelica won’t lose one penny.

WHAT IF YOU’VE ALREADY VOTED BY ABSENTEE BUT WANT TO CHANGE YOUR MIND?

Fact: If you already voted by absentee, you can still vote in person. The Board of Elections is required to check poll books before counting any absentee ballot. If you vote again in person (at early voting, or on Nov. 3) your absentee ballot is set aside and not counted.  (Source: NYS Board of Elections) Say you made an error and need to change your vote.

IF VOTERS APPROVE PROP #1, WE FORFEIT NEGOTIATING POWER. Voters can use their power strategically by voting NO at this time. Give Angelica time to ensure your family’s safety and to best protect our town for the next 25 years.

CAST YOUR VOTE FOR THOROUGH, INFORMED COMMUNITY DECISION MAKING. VOTE “NO” ON PROPOSITION #1
