Winds ruin some Labor Day plans in Allegany County UPDATED

Strong gusty winds caused significant problems in Allegany County Monday. As of mid-afternoon, more than 9,000 utility customers had no power. At its peak, nearly 4,600 RG&E customers were in the dark, followed by 4,250 National Grid customers. NYSEG crews were also busy. The gusty winds blew down trees and toppled utility poles. At one point, Allegany County 911 told responders they were stacking all the reports of damage. The National Weather Service reported Southern Tier wind gusts of 47 mph with a peak gust of 51 mph in Batavia.
