Alfred: Good food off the road

At Jara Farms, Clara Beiler and family offer a wide variety of goodies and staples to the sweet tooth and nutrition satisfied.
ALFRED - Business is better than usual at Jara Farms roadside stand on the Jericho Hill Road; and they have yeast.
The stand on county Route 12, which opened for business less than three years ago is seeing an uptick in business. Clara Beiler, who runs the stand with her husband and eight children said she thinks it has to do with people escaping the confines of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s stay-at-home order or day six of the forced hibernation.
“I think people are taking more rides and they see the stand open and stop to get something fresh,” she said.
The roadside stand is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and until 5 p.m. on Saturday. While the stand is also open on Sundays, there is not always someone tending the store. Beiler said there is a locked cash box where people can pay for their items.
Items can also be ordered online at the Jara Farms page on Facebook and users will receive a 10 percent discount and can decide when to pick up their order.

While the stand offers a wide-variety of baked goods – glazed donuts to molasses cookies, they also offer fresh garlic and potatoes, right now, as well as butter, cheese, eggs, flour, sugar, granola and rolled oats. They also sell meat – chicken, pork, lamb, beef and while it may sound wildly early, they are taking orders for Thanksgiving turkeys.
And if you missed getting your annual dose of maple syrup; Jara Farms is also offering syrup from this year’s harvest.
“It is very sweet and delicious,” Beiler said.
Jara Farms baked goods and produce are a staple at area Farmers Markets.
