Wellsville School Board agrees to move to a Latin Honors system
The Board of Education in Wellsville Monday night approved a resolution to move to a Latin Honors means of recognizing student academic achievement at graduation. The Latin Honors system will begin with the graduating class of 2025. According to school Superintendent David Foster, students achieving at the highest level will be recognized as graduating Summa Cum Laude for a cumulative high school average at or above 96%, Magna Cum Laude for an average at or above 92% and Cum Laude for an average at or above 88%. Foster said "the average levels assure a rigorous measure of academic achievement." He added "we would eliminate the publication of class rank unless requested by a college or university." The High School will establish a process to determine honors speaker(s) at graduation. "I want to thank the many committee members who researched and met throughout 2018-2019 and who presented their recommendation to the Board," Foster said. Later today, the District will post the process and rationale for the change on the school website at www.wellsvilleschools.org.
