Travel Advisory - Interstate 86 over State Route 36, Hornellsville, Steuben County

The New York State Department of Transportation today announced that repair work will begin on the Interstate 86 bridge over State Route 36 in the town of Hornellsville on Tuesday, March 12, 2019.  This project includes demolition of a portion of the bridge deck and replacement of a damaged steel girder.

Work will begin with demolition of the bridge deck, accompanied by State Route 36 lane shifts to keep traffic out from underneath active work on the top side.  To do this, State Route 36 northbound and southbound traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction, temporarily, during the deck demolition.  There will be a need for single day, full closures of each direction (northbound and southbound) during the removal and replacement of the damaged girder.  Interstate 86 ramps will experience closures in phases throughout this process.  VMS boards will keep the traveling public updated, and signed detours will be posted.
Phase I of this project begins with deck demolition starting March 12, 2019.  Northbound traffic on State Route 36 will be reduced to one lane.  Interstate 86 eastbound traffic exiting onto State Route 36 north will come to a full stop at the end of the ramp.
Phase II of this project is anticipated to begin on or about March 14, 2019.  A single lane will be maintained open for both northbound and southbound traffic on State Route 36.  During this phase, the eastbound Interstate 86 exit to State Route 36 north, and the westbound Interstate 86 exit to State Route 36 south will be closed.  Detours will be signed for these ramp closures.
Phase III of this project is anticipated to begin on or about March 18, 2019.  There will be no restrictions on State Route 36 northbound, and a single lane will be open for State Route 36 southbound traffic.  Interstate 86 westbound traffic exiting onto State Route 36 south will come to a full stop at the end of the ramp.
Each direction of State Route 36 will experience a period of full closure following this, during the removal and replacement of the damaged girder.  Each direction will require one closure for the girder removal, and one closure for the girder replacement.  This closure is required to ensure that live traffic is protected during the girder lifting operation.  During the closures, detours will be signed for both directions and Interstate ramps.
