Obituary: James E. Fleming, 86, formerly of Angelica

WELLSVILLE, N.Y. – James E. Fleming, Sr., 86, formerly of Angelica, N.Y., passed away Saturday (Oct. 20, 2018) at his home after a brief illness.
Born July 1, 1932, in Genesee, PA he was the son of Timothy A. and Ora V. Clark Fleming. On December 9, 1952 in Angelica, N.Y., he married Florence Anna Fleming, who passed away on May 21, 1997. On October 11, 2003 in Allentown, N.Y., he married Shirley J. Windus, who survives.
In 1938, the family moved to Angelica, where he attended Angelica Central School until President Roosevelt released boys his age from school to help on the farm in support of World War II. At the age of 12, he was responsible for driving a truck and picking up milk from 20 farms in his area and delivering it downtown.
He was retired from the Town of Angelica, where he was the Superintendent of Highways for 24 years, and from the Village of Angelica where he served as Chief of Police. Prior to these, he worked in numerous construction jobs (bridges, highways, flood control, etc.) and was an accomplished heavy equipment operator including cranes and earthmovers. Jim was also a master-mechanic who would be picked up at the airport in Angelica and flown as far away as Syracuse to work on heavy equipment. He kept working at lawn mower repair and lawn service long after his official retirement and only quit this past June due the illness that took his life.
He loved camping, traveling, mowing grass, playing roque, and the Yankees. He especially loved and enjoyed his large family (3 children, 10 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren).
Surviving in addition to his wife Shirley are, his children James (Sharon) Fleming of Arcade, Dianna (Bill) Emrick of Scio, Timothy (Lori) Fleming of Angelica, his sister Mary Weber of Brockport; and several nieces and nephew.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Florence Fleming, four brothers, Richard Fleming, Edward Fleming, Paul Fleming and Charles Fleming, and two sisters, Helen Brown and Katherine Fleming.
The family will receive friends and family on Thursday (October 25, 2018) from 2-4 & 6-8pm at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home in Angelica at 101 West Avenue. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday (October 27, 2018) at 11:00am at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church 3 Merton Avenue Belfast NY 14711. Burial will take place at the Until the Day Dawn Cemetery in Angelica.
