New York State Police warn public of phone scam in Western New York

PRESS RELEASE
The New York State Police have received information that an individual is contacting the public in Western New York, as far east as Erie County and as far west as Steuben County, identifying themselves as the New York State Police and requesting personal information such as social security numbers.
The number the individuals are calling from shows on caller ID as that of a State Police station, although the calls are not originating from the station. We can confirm this is a scam, and add the State Police would never ask for this information over the phone. We are investigating the matter.
As with any suspicious phone call, the State Police recommend that you never share any personal information over the phone unless you are 100% percent sure of the origin of the call, and that verifying conditions exist such as security questions and passwords that only you and the vendor would know.
