Trooper hit with a knife - Steuben teen arrested after brief struggle

New York State Troopers from the Wayland barracks responded to a domestic dispute which resulted in the arrest of a Wayland man.  At approximately 1:11p.m.on Sunday October 29^th, Troopers responded to a domestic dispute. State Police Investigator Mark Villone said when police entered the home, one of the participants allegedly refused to drop a knife and “subsequently threw it at the Trooper, striking him in the arm.” In a press statement, Investigator Villone said there was a brief struggle before Troopers arrested and charged Geoffery R. Burnett, age 16, of 12 Fremont St., Wayland, N.Y. The teenager was charged with felony Attempted Assault, 2nd degree; Criminal Possession of a Weapon, 4th degree; Criminal Mischief, 4th degree and Resisting Arrest. The Trooper sustained no injuries in the altercation. It is alleged that during the course of the domestic dispute, Burnett damaged property within the residence; threw a knife at the Trooper; actively resisted arrest; and possessed a dangerous weapon. Burnett was arraigned before Village of Wayland Justice Tom Recktenwald and remanded to the Steuben County Jail in lieu of $3,000.00 cash bail, or $6,000.00 property bond.  He is scheduled to reappear in the Village of Wayland Court on November 3^rd at 10 a.m.
