Some swim areas of Keuka lake closed
The swim areas at Indian Pines Park and Red Jacket Park in
Penn Yan will remain closed until at least tomorrow after officials discovered
possible toxic blue green algae. As of Friday, the state Department of
Environmental Conservation still listed the area as suspected, but not
confirmed. Sixty New York lakes and ponds now have toxic algae blooms, up 25
percent from a week ago. Dr. Tim Sellers, a biologist at Keuka College said he has been
monitoring the Lake for some time and believes the area health danger will be
relatively short-lived and sporadic in location. Dr. Sellers said these are
naturally occurring species in Keuka Lake and most other lakes. It’s not
necessarily the presence that matters but the quantity. The higher the density,
the greater the chance of health issues.
