Alfred State College receives $5 million gift

Tom Golisano, ’62, announced $360 million in awards to 82 non-profit organizations this included a gift of $5 million to his alma mater Alfred State College. This is the largest gift the college has ever received.

“Tom Golisano has built an amazing career after his time at Alfred State, and this gift is a game changer and will help so many future Pioneers,” commented Alfred State President Dr. Steve Mauro. “We are honored and beyond grateful that he thought so much of his alma mater to include us in this huge commitment to our area.”

The unrestricted, multiyear awards range from $250,000 to $20 million each, paid over four to five years, spanning healthcare, education, animal welfare, disability services, and other crucial community needs. This significant financial commitment represents support for a diverse range of causes, all of which are meaningful to Golisano. Awards received may be used at each organization’s discretion.

“I’m thrilled to provide support to the Upstate New York community, to the region where I built my life and my business.” said Mr. Golisano. “I know that there are many organizations doing great work and understand that running a nonprofit is not easy, facing both opportunities and challenges, like raising money. These awards are the result of relationships I’ve formed over the years. I am impressed with these organizations’ dedication and innovation. I hope this unexpected, unrestricted funding helps them build on their successes and broaden their impact.”

Golisano earned a business administration degree from Alfred State and credits his accounting Professor Thomas Dunn for leading him on the path to becoming a successful entrepreneur. In 2009, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters.   Golisano visited Alfred State in 2021 and spoke to business majors about his career path, his book “Built Not Born”, and recalled his interaction with Dunn. “Professor Dunn was a master at educating us on how to understand financial statements.”

Golisano continues, “One of my favorite sayings is ‘the only wealth you keep is that which you give away,’ and I’m so lucky to be able to live that out. The success of Paychex, the hard work of the employees there— is ultimately what makes these donations possible, and I am beyond grateful that I have the ability to do so. I look forward to seeing how this will be used to strengthen their organizations and better the communities they serve.”

Wellsville court race: retired Trooper V. retired mayor

The November election has an interesting contest for the Wellsville Town Justice. A retired state trooper and commander is facing off against a retired three-term mayor and retired Alfred University official.

The race opened up when Karl Graves (former legislator and Sheriff's Lieutenant) stepped down recently due to health concerns. Former Justice Shaun Walsh agreed to fill in until the end of the year.

David Gresham served 27 years with the New York State Police, many of those in the town of Wellsville. Gresham served as a state police station commander in Allegany County. He was also the Director of the state police western regional crime laboratory. Gresham, who lives on North Hill Road has been selected to run on the Republican line. He has lived in Wellsville for 37 years.

On the Democrat side running for office is Susan Goetschius. She was a high-ranking official at Alfred University as well as a three-term mayor in the village of Wellsville. She gained attention when in her third term, she ran on the 'Brighter Futures Party' and as an independent...and won, an uncommon occurrence in Wellsville. While in office, Goetschius managed police and fire services for the largest municipal village in Allegany County. Goetschius was instrumental in bringing Microtel to Wellsville. In 1996, she also spearheaded emergency response efforts during a massive flood in Wellsville.

The election is November 5th.

SOUTHERN TIER MAN AND WOMAN CHARGED TO PRODUCE CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

BUFFALO, N.Y. - U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross announced today that David A. Johnston, 55, of Allegany, NY, and Kayla R. Kio, 26, of Olean, NY, were arrested and charged by criminal complaint with conspiracy to produce child pornography, which carries a mandatory minimum penalty of 15 years in prison, a maximum of 30 years, and a $250,000 fine.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron J. Mango, who is handling the case, stated that according to the complaint, on March 2, 2024, the New York State were called to Wal-Mart in Olean, for a report of a domestic dispute. Kio reported that she was being stalked and harassed by her ex-boyfriend, Johnston. The two worked together at Wal-Mart. Kio stated that in February 2024, while she was in the process of breaking up with Johnston, he requested that she produce and send to him sexually explicit videos of a 5-year-old child. Troopers seized Kio’s cell phone and recovered multiple videos and images of child pornography.

On March 13, 2024, the NYSP executed a search warrant at Johnston’s Allegany residence, during which they seized four cell phones and a tablet. Investigators recovered videos of child pornography and sexually explicit communications exchanged between Kio and Johnston. Johnston was charged with Possessing a Sexual Performance of a Child and Endangering the Welfare of a Child, while Kio was charged with Promoting a Sexual Performance by a Child and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. In 2007, Johnston was convicted of Indecent Assault and Corruption of Minors in McKean, PA, County Court.

Johnston and Kio made an initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge H. Kenneth Schroeder, Jr. Kio was released on conditions. Johnston is being held pending a detention hearing on September 17, 2024, at 2:30 p.m.

The complaint is the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Matthew Miraglia, the New York State Police, under the direction of Major Stanley Edwards, and the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office, under the direction of Sheriff Timothy Whitcomb.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

When the Genesee River gauge misbehaves

Early Tuesday afternoon, I received an alert that the Genesee River at Wellsville was approaching flood stage. Odd, I thought, since there was no rain (for days). I looked out my upstairs window and didn't see anything. According to the river gauge, the Genesee was over 9 feet. Every now and then, technology misbehaves!
