WELLSVILLE – Friday and Saturday, Wellsville High School will be full of Lions when basketball teams vie for championships and members of the Lions Club hit the stage for the 75th Annual Lions Club Show – once known as the Minstrel Show.
Most of the Minstrel Show antics have been left behind in favor of multiple musical and variety acts. According to director Al Mosher the acts were selected because they were the most popular over the years and “This is our 75th year and we wanted to bring back some of the acts and individuals who have helped us over the years,” he said.
Headlining are Joelle and Melissa Harvey, the Bolivar-Richburg graduates who went on to become world-renown sopranos, each in their own right. The sisters who once performed for the Lions Club Show, are making a return appearance.
But while they may be known across the continents, closer to home, local vocalists will be also be taking to the stage.
Bernie Riley is reprising his Britney Spears act with the help of the chorus. Kathy Holla will be singing two songs, one of them “Crazy” by Patsy Cline while Rich Shear will be singing and playing the harmonica. With a rich baritone, at 83, Joe Meade crushes ‘Summertime’ from “Showboat” accompanied by Carole Aldrich on keyboard. Blues Brothers, Wally Gardner and Bruce Thomas have revised those memorable SNL characters. Additional acts include the Lawn Chair Drill Team, Whistling Midgets and Munchkins who will help Joe ‘Dorothy’ Holla down the Yellow Brick Road. “It is going to be a fun show,” Mosher says.
A little more than 50 men and women of the Lions Club will be preforming two shows, the first at 7:30 p.m. Friday and the second at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, both in the Wellsville High School auditorium. The cost is $8 at the door or advanced tickets for $7 can be purchased at the Wellsville Area Chamber of Commerce, Brand Name Appliances or from any member of the Lions Club. Funds raised from the show, benefit the many charities supported by the Lions Club.
