UPLAND GARDENER

UPLAND GARDENER
By ML WELLS

Most small minded see things in black and white. Those who notice butterflies as they flit about a thing of enchanting beauty and place it on the “white” side.
Most gardeners on the other hand definitely place the pesky caterpillar on the black end of the spectrum!
The truth almost always lies between in that all engulfing grey area. You can not have the lovely butterfly without its caterpillar. As with many things in life, this is a double edged sword.
So, if you desire the presence of the magnificent Tiger Swallowtail by Memorial Day, you must tolerate its earlier stage, the yellow, green, black caterpillar. Better yet, plant more dill, carrots, yarrow and anise just for it.
Share your garden’s bounty (no poison sprays) and it will share its wonder.
