The movie, Jesus, will be screened, with free popcorn and other refreshments, at Knights Creek Church, 2987 Knights Creek Road (County Road 9) as part of its First Friday of the month alternating movie and community cafe connections with the community.
Pastor Carl Kemp said the film has been shown to millions of individuals around the world and holds the record for translation into more than 1,600 languages and growing.
The movie often is confused with the film, Passion of the Christ, which is different. The Jesus project was developed by Cru, formerly known as Campus Crusade for Christ. The local church has been supporting the film's expansion throughout the world for several years and also helps fund a missionary couple in Mexico who goes into migrant camps to show the movie.
Individuals and families, who live in poor housing conditions on that country's farms during the harvest season, work all day in the fields and then stand and sit on the ground outside for two hours at night to see the film which portrays the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, as described in the Bible's New Testament Gospel of Luke, and shows the strong presence of his parents in early life, and assembly and discipling of his apostles..
The film screening also will inaugurate the start of a new youth group forming at the church, to meet at the same times each week.
Pastor Kemp said the First Friday activities have been developed from a church planning series on how to embrace the greater community and its residents. The church seeks to expand on a free Community Picnic it hosted during the summer at Scio's Fireman's Park with residents of the hamlet and surrounding areas participating, along with music and games at the first coffee house last month.
Knights Creek, which describes itself as "The Country Church with the Heart of Christ", is engaged in a number of community outreaches, including a free Community Dinner each Sunday following its 11 a.m. service, free Sunday afternoon music lessons for children and adults, and serving as a host site for Celebrate Recovery/Celebrate Victory from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays for adults of all ages who are struggling with any type of hurts, hangups,habits or destructive behaviors.
Its Venezuelan music team, which includes a music missionary from the Simon Bolivar National Symphony Orchestra, plays weekly at the church and also has been at various venues within the community and the county.
Church volunteers are part of a team that goes into Allegany County Jail weekly to present Celebrate Recovery to inmates and provides other ministries to help those who are struggling to cope with the upcoming holidays.
It also holds a 6 p.m. service on Sundays, a 6 p.m. Bible study Wednesdays, and community prayer from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. each weekday for anyone with community, family or individual concerns.
