August 4 & 5

WWI Cemetery Tour, “Legacy” Author Meet & Greet, “Angel Station” Anniversary, will Highlight 49th Annual Heritage Days Festival

If you come to Heritage Days in Angelica for the focus on local history, you’re sure to enjoy this year’s program. The weekend commemorates the 100th anniversary of the November 11, 1918 armistice that ended the First World War with a WWI tour of Until the Day Dawn Cemetery. Seven veterans of that conflict will “come to life” to tell their stories. Local reenactors will portray these veterans, talking in turn about their wartime experiences as the tour group moves from one gravesite to the next.

Among the seven is Robert Hill, who will act as tour guide. Hill was killed in action in France on Oct. 20, 1918, and is buried in the American Military Cemetery in that country.  The Hill-Warner American Legion Post 414 is named in his honor (along with Robert Warner from World War II).

The World War I Cemetery Tour will be offered twice on Saturday, at 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., and on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Tour tickets are $5.00 and will be available at the Booster Citizens tent in Park Circle. Tractor-drawn wagon transportation will be provided from the park to the cemetery.

Also in the Heritage Days spotlight will be Julie Rowe Cooke, author of Legacy: My Ancestors and a Town Called Angelica. The 195-page soft-cover book, newly-published by the Booster Citizens under the Heritage Days Press imprint, “is much more than a rich family history. It is a mini-history of railroading in the Allegany County, NY area, a guidebook for budding genealogists, and a love letter to the Town of Angelica and its residents, both past and present.” Cooke will speak about her work at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the Methodist Church, on the circle, and then will sign copies at the Boosters tent, where the book will be for sale for $15.

For sale too, at $15, will be a 20th anniversary poster of the Angel Station postal cancellation. The work of local artist Pat Kaake, the cancellation has been offered for Christmas card mailings at the Angelica Post Office every December since 1997.

And on Saturday as well, at 1:30 p.m. in the First Baptist Church, Pastor David Ford will give a talk, “My Kenyan Adventure”, about his recent missionary trip to that African country.

Along with the local history emphasis, the Heritage Days festival will feature a full lineup of live music in the Park Circle bandstand; a large art-craft-antique market; croquet tournament on the unique “roque” court; Colonial Rooms museum open at Angelica Free Library; wagon rides through the Historic District; theme basket auction; and plenty of good food, including a Sunday chicken barbecue.

Heritage Days is sponsored by the Angelica Booster Citizens. For more information on the August 4 & 5 event (including market vendor participation), email angelicaboosters@gmail.com or call 585-466-7930; visit angelicaboosters.com, or the Booster Citizens on Facebook.
