Independence police warn of scam

The Independence Police received information regarding fraud by use of Facebook messenger to contact people. The victim received a friends request from a person the victim does not know. After becoming friends, the victim received a message, “Hello how are you doing”. The subject continues with small talk with the potential victim. Later in the conversation, the subject asks if the victim ever “Heard anything about Governm...ent Department of Workers Compensation Appeals Board and Federal Government Grant”. When the victim stated no, the subject described the program as special and helps pay bills, buy homes and to start your own business. The subject then stated he received $100,000.00 when he applied. The subject then told the victim it was a life opportunity and the victim would have to contact the “agent in charge”. The subject then messaged photos of a box containing wrapped $100 bills. The money was then allegedly delivered to the doorstep of the subject. The victim contacted this department and he was instructed to unfriend and then block the subject. Ultimately we believe the subject would have attempted to gain personal information from the victim. First and foremost if an unknown party contacts you requesting to friend’s you, do not do it. Do not ever give your personal information to anyone on Facebook or any other social media sites. The government entities do not conduct business over Facebook. If you receive any suspicious activity or request, do not provide your personal information and do not send or wire money of any kind. If you have any questions please feel free to private message this department.
