A Statement from Wellsville Secondary School Administration

To Wellsville Secondary School Students and Families:
We all support student voice and a desire to express our sympathy to the families of the 17 people who lost their lives in Parkland, Florida.  Student protests are anticipated to occur on Wednesday, March 14th from 10:00 a.m. – 10:17a.m.  In anticipation of this event, our first priority is to ensure the safety of our students who make the decision to participate in this protest event.
If your child chooses to participate in the protest that is occurring outside of the building, we ask that you provide a note excusing your student for this specific purpose.  This is in line with our regular attendance policy and procedures. The excuse is to be turned into the attendance office in advance.
Should any student leave the building or leave campus without permission, consequences will be issued as per the student code of conduct.
This is a normal day of instruction and teaching will continue during the protest period.
In speaking with our secondary school student leaders, it appears their protest will focus on memorializing the 17 lives lost in Parkland, Florida with 17 minutes of silence.   The protest is anticipated to last from 10:00 a.m. -10:17a.m.
Our High School Student Leaders are also organizing a “Messages of Support” initiative on Wednesday, March 14th.  As an alternative to, and in addition to, other events occurring on this day, our student leaders will provide an opportunity to extend words of support directly to the students of Parkland, Florida by organizing a poster campaign where messages of support can be written by students and staff in our school.  This poster will be available in our main lobby during the school day and then will be sent directly to Stoneman Douglas High School, in Parkland, Florida.  As district officials, we applaud this initiative to reach out directly to those who might appreciate these words of support.
