Garden Coordinator Position Description
March 2018-December 2018
Position: Fassett GreenSpace Garden Coordinator
Reports to: Art for Rural America Board, Garden Outreach Committee
Position Description:
  • Art for Rural America is seeking an experienced gardener and community organizer to help create and coordinate “The Fassett GreenSpace” on Main street in Wellsville, NY. The “Fassett GreenSpace” is an outlet for both an interactive art space and a functional community / teaching garden. Our ideal candidate for this position likes working with the public, has an interest in supporting people in their abilities to grow healthy and fresh food, and is open to learning about the needs of the Wellsville community.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Recruit and support Wellsville residents to participate in planting and cultivating the Fassett GreenSpace.
  • Coordinate on-going volunteer events to maintain the garden throughout the year
  • Work with contractors and volunteers to design and install a garden labyrinth
  • Establish and maintain community partnerships with local organizations
  • Support gardeners in learning affordable and sustainable gardening practices
  • Coordinate and/or teach on-site workshops that teach gardeners how to grow, prepare and preserve fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Coordinate activities and learning opportunities in collaboration with local organizations and schools
  • Supervise distribution of gardening supplies – seeds, plant starts, educational materials
  • Develop and support leadership opportunities for Wellsville residents
  • Secure in-kind donations
  • Establish and maintain participant tracking and other data collection systems
  • Evaluate and report program results to the AFRA board
  • Create and implement a five-year strategic work plan with the AFRA board
Required Skills / Experience:
  • Experience building relationships in rural communities
  • Knowledge of regional fruit, vegetable, and flower gardening
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Creative problem-solving abilities
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the experience of people with limited incomes
  • Demonstrated ability to work with families and children
  • Experience recruiting and supervising volunteers
  • Diplomacy and ability to work with a variety of personalities
  • Conflict resolution skills
  • Demonstrated cultural competency
  • Dedicated to promoting equity, inclusivity and diversity


Preferred Skills / Experiences:
  • Community organizing and event planning
  • Experience working with graphic design software
  • A commitment to the prosperity of the village of Wellsville
  • Strategic planning development
  • Marketing and advertising skills
  • Research and critical thinking skills


Other Requirements:
  • Physical ability to walk, lift, bend and carry up to 30 pounds
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ability to work some weekends and evenings throughout the year
  • Valid driver’s license


Compensation: This position gets a $1,500 stipend for the 2018 growing season to accomplish all necessary tasks.
