Unemployment rates send mixed signals

The New York State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for August 2017.
From August 2016 to August 2017, the State’s private sector job count increased by 141,500. In August 2017, the number of private sector jobs in the State was 8,094,500.  In addition, the State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased from 4.7% to 4.8% in August 2017.

The counties in New York State with the lowest unemployment rates in August 2017 include:
  • Columbia County (3.6%)
  • Hamilton County (3.7%)
  • Saratoga County (3.8%)
  • Yates County (3.9%)
  • Ontario County (4.0%)
  • Genesee County (4.1%)
  • Seneca County (4.1%)
  • Washington County (4.1%)
  • Dutchess County (4.2%)
  • Nassau County (4.2%)
  • Warren County (4.2%)
