LIVINGSTON COUNTY: Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty reports the LCSO in collaboration with the Springwater Fire Department and the Coriddi family held a special recognition ceremony for the Froehler family. The ceremony was held at the Sheriff's Office HQ in afternoon roll call.
Sheriff Dougherty read the following and presented the Froehler's with certificates of citizen commendation.
"On the afternoon of August 1, 2017, Thomas Froehler, his wife Shannon, their son Kyle, and their two dogs were enjoying a day of relaxation at the bottom of a set of waterfalls off of Canadice Road in the Town of Springwater.
At the same time, Chris Coriddi and a friend were out hiking in the same area. At about 3:25 that day, events took an unsuspecting turn when Chris slipped off the waterfalls that he was climbing and fell approximately 60 feet to the bottom of the falls in the area where the Froehler family was at.
The actions that Tom and Shannon took at that moment likely turned a tragic event into one with a very positive outcome. Shannon immediately called 911 and Tom quickly pulled Chris from the water. Thomas recognized that Chris began having seizure like symptoms and appeared to stop breathing. Tom gave Chris rescue breaths until he started breathing more regularly. Tom made sure that Chris had a pulse and then turned his attention to controlling the bleeding that Chris had from a head wound from the fall.
While all this was going on, Shannon was relaying important information to 911 dispatchers and law enforcement officials about the status of Chris and what was occurring at the bottom of the falls.
Emergency personnel from the Sheriff’s Office and several local Fire and EMS Departments had been dispatched to the scene but due to the natural terrain, were having difficulty getting resources to bottom of the falls.
Tom and Shannon continued to comfort Chris and keep him in a stable condition. Shannon stayed on the phone with emergency responders for close to an hour and twenty minutes until the appropriate resources could respond to conduct a calculated rescue.
Eventually a high angle rope rescue team from Ontario County was able to get Chris to high ground so he could be transported to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Today, the Sheriff’s Office along with the Springwater Fire Department and the Coriddi family want to recognize and thank Tom, Shannon, and their son Kyle for their efforts on August 1st."
The Springwater Fire Department also presented the Froehler's with a certificate of recognition.
Chris is attending college at St. John Fisher and was unable to attend but the Coriddi family presented the Froehler's with a letter from Chris and a letter from them as parents in appreciation for their actions.
