Press Releases from Rick Gallant, candidate for Congress

Rick Gallant’s Response to Reed’s Claim That Trumpcare Doesn’t “Touch Medicaid”

PAINTED POST, N.Y. – Congressional candidate Rick Gallant issued the following statement in response to statements by Congressman Tom Reed on MSNBC Monday:
“Congressman Tom Reed was defending Trumpcare in an interview with Katy Tur today on MSNBC when he stated ‘Well, that’s why we don’t touch Medicaid - Medicaid itself. People at poverty or below will be taken care of in both bills.’ Reed went on to clarify that ‘It’s touching Medicaid expansion.’ This statement is ridiculous since both the House and Senate versions of the bill cut Medicaid.
According to the CBO score released yesterday, the Senate bill cuts $772 billion from Medicaid through 2026. This will have a devastating effect on people in our district, especially children, elderly people, and people with disabilities. According to The Center for American Progress, the earlier House version of the bill would result in 33,800 people in New York's 23rd District losing Medicaid coverage, and the Senate version cuts Medicaid even more than that.
These cuts to Medicaid enable a tax cut for the wealthiest Americans. It's all about priorities. It would seem that tax cuts for the wealthy are more important to Congressman Tom Reed than health care for the people of his district.”

Trumpcare Cuts Medicaid to Enable a Tax Cut for the Wealthiest Americans
PAINTED POST, N.Y. – In response to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) score for the Senate's version of Trumpcare, released Monday, congressional candidate Rick Gallant issued the following statement:
“The Senate bill cuts $772 billion from Medicaid through 2026. This will have a devastating effect on people in our district, especially children, elderly people, and people with disabilities. In addition, the CBO estimates that the Senate bill will result in 15 million additional people uninsured in 2018. By 2026, the number of people uninsured is projected to rise to 49 million (22 million more than it would be under current law). Trumpcare will increase already high health costs for New York families and kick an estimated 68,300 in the district off of their health coverage. It also guts key protections for patients, adds a crushing age tax, and steals money from Medicare, all to allow a tax cut for the wealthiest Americans. Congressman Tom Reed voted for Trumpcare and will be held accountable for its negative effects on the American people.”
About Rick Gallant
Rick Gallant is running for Congress as a Democrat in New York's 23rd Congressional District. Raised by a family of educators, Rick Gallant has served as a teacher and basketball coach in the Corning-Painted Post School District in New York for the past 17 years. A former assistant college basketball coach and sportswriter, Rick and his wife, Amy, moved to the area two decades ago and ran a small business running whitewater rafting tours.

Rick took on a leadership role in his union, earning the trust of his peers to serve as President of the Corning Teachers’ Association and now represents 150 local unions from Waverly to Westfield on the Board of Directors for New York State United Teachers, where he fights for teachers, teaching assistants, bus drivers and monitors, custodians, and clerical staff.

Rick is running for Congress because the Southern Tier and Southwestern New York have been left behind by Washington. Tom Reed too often puts his own political party or himself ahead of families while Rick will put people first and work to bring jobs and opportunities back to our region. It’s time the people of New York’s 23rd District had someone who has walked in their shoes and hears their concerns.
