Steuben’s 683 road miles are now rated as 25 percent better than the state average and 36 percent better than the U.S. Department of Transportation’s rating of the nation’s rural roads.. Road improvements in 2016 included 48 miles of roads recycled, blacktopped and reconstructed, with an overall “poor to fair” rating of 36 percent, compared to 48 percent rated by the state in the category, and 55 percent of all U.S. rural roads.
